The best estimates of graduation rates indicate that about 70 percent of 9th-graders in California graduate from high school four years later. There has been little change in this rate over the past decade. Tracking a sample of individual students from 7th-grade enrollment to graduation reveals a much greater loss of students: only 55 percent of those 7th-grade students graduate six years later. Hispanic and African American students graduate at substantially lower rates than their White and Asian/Pacific Islander peers.
